The accession includes correspondence, memoranda, scientific papers, speeches, maps, photographs, blueprints and other material documenting the life of Willard Bascom. The papers include manuscripts, notes, correspondence and other items documenting Bascom's publications and speeches, including material on Waves and beaches, A Hole in the bottom of the sea and Bascom's autobiography, The Crest of the wave: adventures in oceanography. The accession also includes material documenting Bascom's career as a consultant, and his work for the National Academy of Sciences leading the Mohole Project. There is ample material documenting Bascom's lawsuit against the Central Intelligence Agency which concerned techniques for the recovery of material undersea. There is a small quantity of material documenting Bascom's personal life, and a small quantity of material documenting the life of Bascom's friend and colleague John Dove Isaacs. Some material documenting Bascom's personal life and friendships and especially his youth have been filed among research material for his autobiography. The accession includes some files documenting Bascom's experiences dredging for diamonds in South Africa and recovering treasure from a Spanish wreck off the Bahamas.
